Teachers respect
Give your teachers the respect they deserve, because they are the ones who can help you get where you need to go. (Richard Howard)
With changing trends, where children have become more vocal and extrovert, they are misbehaving as well. The new generation believes in voicing their opinion openly. On one end this is a good thing as many issues come into the open and are discussed for the betterment e.g. child sexual abuse.
On the other end, children have become very blunt and tend to give less respect to their peers, domestic servants and sometimes teachers. When we tell our children, “be honest, be open, say what you want to say”, we forget to warn them, “but carefully choose your words, do not hurt other people’s feelings, think how you would feel if they say something harsh to you.”
Teach children to be kind and thoughtful
We need to encourage our children to think before they speak, put themselves in the other person’s shoes before judging them and sometimes praise people to make them feel better. For example, if a sibling has not won a competition, do not make fun of his/her project. Let them know that they did a great job but there could be only one winner.
Being kind, thoughtful and compassionate towards others should be part of our children’s education at home and at schools. As parents, we need to teach our children to respect their educators. A teacher may be strict, tough and sometimes unfair with your child. But you need to remind your child that the teacher is only human; they can make mistakes.
A few tips you can teach your children to make their teachers feel special and motivated
The respect the teacher gets from her students is no doubt a great reward. But we are loosing that at a fast speed. We need to instill a love for our educators in our children’s minds and hearts. We need to teach our children to value their teachers and treat them well. A few tips that you can teach your child:
- Give your teacher small gifts like cards, flowers and/or chocolates on occasions like birthdays, Eid, New Year, End of Term
- Help teachers when you see them in trouble e.g. offer to carry their books, open doors for them when they are coming to your classroom
- If a teacher looks unwell or upset offer water/ask her if you can be of any assistance to her
- As a student don’t lose your temper if your teacher scolds you. Rember, she may have other problems her own and maybe she is having a bad day, so let it go!
Teachers are the backbone of our society. They educate our children and give shape to the future of a nation. Hence we as parents must respect them and teach the same to our children.
