Building a Global Community for Mathematical Excellence by CIMPA School at LUMS

Due to the department’s noteworthy contributions to the advancement of mathematics in the area, LUMS has been named an Emerging Regional Center of Excellence (ERCE). The Commission of Developing Countries of the European Mathematical Sciences has recognized LUMS as a pioneering institution in the region for mathematical education and research, and has bestowed this accolade upon it.
March 26–March 8, 2024 is the date of the prestigious CIMPA Research School on Algebra and Algebraic Geometry for Applications, which is being hosted by the Department of Mathematics, leveraging its international prestige.
Established in France in 1978, the Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA) is committed to promoting mathematical research in underdeveloped countries.

The goal of the LUMS project is to provide participants with contemporary algebraic and geometric techniques along with their practical applications.
Renowned mathematicians from across the globe give talks at the CIMPA School, sharing their wealth of knowledge. The esteemed lineup features Dr. Thomas Kahle from Otto-von-Guericke Universitat Magdeburg, Germany; Ms. Sara Saeedi Madani from Amirkabir University of Technology and IPM, Iran; Dr. Carlos Amendola from Technical University of Berlin, Germany; Dr. Aida Maraj from University of Michigan, USA; Dr. Beatriz Pascual Escudero from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain; Dr. Miruna-Stefana Sorea from “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, Romania; and prominent locals Dr. Imran Anwar and Dr. Shaheen Nazir from Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan.

Participants have gathered at LUMS for this unique academic experience from a variety of nations, including Iran, Vietnam, Canada, Germany, and Spain.

Furthermore, a sizable portion of attendees are participating in the sessions virtually. LUMS and IBA Karachi are co-hosting this CIMPA School, which draws a large number of attendees from Sindh and Karachi to IBA’s lectures. Speakers will present lectures from LUMS and IBA sites throughout the School.

It is critical to comprehend the real-world applications of algebra and geometry in today’s data-driven and innovative environment. At the CIMPA inaugural event, Dr. Imran Anwar, an associate professor at LUMS, said, “We are excited to host the CIMPA Research School, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among mathematicians worldwide.”

Through the gathering of professionals and enthusiasts from many areas and backgrounds, the CIMPA School creates opportunities for productive discussions, joint ventures, and long-term collaborations. It represents a major step forward for the field of mathematics education and research.

The European Mathematical Society (EMS), CIMPA, ICTP (Italy), the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan are just a few of the prestigious partners and contributors who make this event possible. The collaborative and inclusive culture of CIMPA School fosters a global community united in the pursuit of mathematical achievement.
