University of Home Economics Lahore Hosts “Joint Social and Cultural Actions Project” Event
The University of Home Economics Lahore hosted an event on the topic of the “Joint Social and Cultural Actions Project,” organized by the Department of Human Rights in collaboration with the charitable organization Bargad. The event was attended by Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora, Vice Chancellor of the University of Home Economics, Professor Dr. Syeda Fariha, Vice Chancellor of UET Dr. Shahid Munir, Executive Director of Bargad, Sabihah Shaheen, and other prominent personalities.
The ceremony began with the recitation of sacred verses from the Quran, Bible, Bhagavad Gita, and Guru Granth Sahib. On this occasion, Director of Human Rights Muhammad Yusuf and Program Manager Rabia Dar served as moderators.
Provincial Minister Ramesh Singh Arora, in his address, expressed his commitment to promoting interfaith harmony and reiterated the provincial government’s determination to implement minority quotas.
He stated that religious minorities across Punjab are celebrating their festivals with complete freedom, and such seminars will further strengthen interfaith harmony. The provincial minister also announced that the issuance of Minority Cards for religious minorities will begin soon. Additionally, in line with the vision of Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, scholarships have been introduced to empower women, and it is a matter of pride for women that their Chief Minister is a woman.
Dr. Fariha Zahra Kazmi emphasized inclusive education and mentioned that the University of Home Economics has allocated 2% of seats for minority students. She stressed the need for collective efforts to focus on education. Mufti Ashiq Hussain stated that when Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians unite, Pakistan will become even more beautiful. Dr. Shahid Munir emphasized the importance of implementing education and employment quotas for minorities and suggested a 5% job quota for educated minorities.
Sabihah Shaheen shed light on the project’s successes and shared that local peace structures have been established in eight union councils in Lahore, and 45 social action projects have been launched by the LPS members. The event also featured two important panel discussions: one on successful community engagement efforts by LPS members, and another focused on the implementation of education and employment quotas for minority communities.
At the conclusion of the event, Provincial Minister Ramesh Singh Arora, along with the participants, cut a Christmas cake. Certificates were distributed to LPS members and community leaders, and honorary shields were presented to notable personalities.
