The government’s winter vacation plan is opposed by private schools.

To combat the persistent pollution problem and cold weather, the Punjab government intends to declare winter vacations in December. The Private Schools Association, however, has voiced concerns and asked that the amount of holidays be reevaluated by the authorities.

The proposed holidays, according to District Education Authority officials, are intended to reduce health concerns brought on by the severe smog, especially in the Potohar region and Murree, where the quality of the air has declined.

Punjab’s Secretary of Schools, Khalid Nazir Watoo, declared that the government’s plan calls for a 20-day sabbatical that will end on January 10, 2025. The plan has drawn criticism from Abrar Ahmed Khan, president of the All Pakistan Private Schools Association for North Punjab.

He maintained that extended summer breaks, closures brought on by smog, and public demonstrations have already caused disruptions to the school year. In order to minimise the disruption to kids’ education, he suggested cutting the holiday to just 10 days, beginning on January 1.

Smog has caused school closures in Punjab in the past. Schools in Lahore and other regions were closed for a few days last month due to dangerously high levels of air pollution. The need for long-term measures to enhance air quality and safeguard public health has once again been brought to light by this year’s smog catastrophe.
