The governor of Punjab modifies the contentious Aitchison College rule.

Aitchison Board of Governors Chairman and Punjab Governor have modified a college rule that sparked a significant debate recently.

Details indicate that the Governor granted students who reserved seats during a leave of absence a 50% cost waiver.
Recall that Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman ordered the waiver of fees for the sons of Ahad Cheema, the Federal Minister for Establishment Division and Economic Affairs, last month.
Strong reactions followed this decision, and Michael A. Thomson, the college principal, resigned in protest. Citing “prejudiced actions by Governor House” and characterising them as “unwarranted interference and brazen directives,” Thompson tendered his resignation.

Principal Michael A. Thomson resigned, and Amina Kamran was named acting principal by the Board of Governors (BoG) of the college.

It should be mentioned that the former Aitchison principal had already quit from his position as a result of political meddling. In September 2018, he submitted his resignation, reportedly due to pressure from political circles following his disciplinary actions against certain students.

Reports at the time stated that the college’s Board of Governors was pressuring the principal to allow the son of former MNA Kashmala Tariq to reapply for A-levels following his earlier expulsion.

Later on, though, he retracted his resignation after visiting him to be convinced to change his mind by the provincial education minister and the then-Punjab governor, Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar.
