Signature on Memorandum of Understanding between University of Karachi and Pakistan Biological Safety Association

A ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the University of Karachi and the Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) was held on Monday at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat, University of Karachi. The memorandum of understanding was signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, and the President of the Pakistan Biological Safety Association, Professor Dr. Saeed Khan. The purpose of this agreement is to promote awareness of biosafety, biosecurity, and risk management in the laboratories, campuses, and society of the University of Karachi. Various departments of the Faculty of Sciences, as well as biological researchers and scientists, were present at the occasion. According to the memorandum of understanding, the University of Karachi and PBSA have agreed to collaborate on scientific, research, and educational initiatives for training and development of bioscientists and researchers.

The Pakistan Biological Safety Association will provide technical assistance and expertise for training at the University of Karachi, and joint efforts will be made to provide training in biosafety and biosecurity.

Additionally, the Pakistan Biological Safety Association has proposed to facilitate faculty members of the University of Karachi in obtaining certification from the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA) for their certification exams. On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, stated that educational collaboration is essential for aligning with progressive nations and meeting the demands of the modern era.

He emphasized that without educational collaboration, we cannot achieve our educational goals. He noted that there is a gradual increase in understanding the benefits of protective measures among people, and now work is being done to ensure confidence in protective measures, which is promising. He stated that through training, the staff, students, and professors will learn a lot about the importance of biosafety, biosecurity, and risk management.

President of PBSA, Professor Dr. Saeed Khan, mentioned that mutual cooperation can enhance the available resources of both institutions. He said that PBSA, in collaboration with the University of Karachi, will organize training sessions for other universities in Sindh. He also mentioned that PBSA provided the best facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the training they received helped the country deal with the situation effectively.
