Transgender Teachers Will Be Hired by the Punjab Government

For its recently opened adult education centres throughout Punjab, the Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department has declared that transgender people with matriculation qualifications will be hired as teachers.

Under the motto “Read, Write, Develop,” 180 centers—five in each district, including Rawalpindi—will be constructed to offer literacy opportunities throughout the province.

Both male and female teachers are welcome to apply for the program, which offers a monthly remuneration of Rs12,500. But this sum has sparked worries about recruiting qualified teachers and upholding academic standards.

Candidates between the ages of 18 and 55 are invited to apply for the teaching posts, which are open until November 30. Each centre will have 25 to 30 kids enrolled, with an emphasis on reading and writing as foundational literacy skills.

Participants will get certificates acknowledging their accomplishments following a three-month course. Similar initiatives are also being introduced by the department in Punjab’s prisons.

In order to promote education within correctional facilities, two centres in each of the 39 jails will train educated convicts to instruct others in literacy.

While tackling literacy issues among marginalised populations, officials have characterised the project as a step towards inclusive education, especially for the transgender community. The program aims to have a significant influence throughout the province by encouraging employment and education.
