970 specialists, including 807 fellows and 163 members, received degrees at the 57th convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), the nation’s top medical school, on Thursday.
Punjab’s Health Minister Khawaja Muhammad Salman Rafique and Professor Andrew Elder, President of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, were among the distinguished guests. As honorary guests, Professor SMM Niyas, President of the College of Surgeons Sri Lanka, and Lieutenant General Nigar Johar, Pakistan’s first female general officer, also attended.
The occasion was also attended by Dr. Asad Rahim, the CPSP Regional Director from Birmingham, England. In addition to the parents of the graduates, the convocation was attended by CPSP officials from all four provinces, heads of medical institutions, and notable medical professionals such as Dr. Amjad Saqib, Prof. Akhter Sohail Chugtai, Prof. Abdul Majeed Chaudhry, Maj. Gen. Salman, Prof. Fareed Zafar, Prof. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta, Prof. Mukhtar Hasan Randhawa, and Prof. Khalil Rana.
Professor Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, Senior Vice President of CPSP, gave the participants the oath and urged them to keep their promise to serve humanity in their careers. In his introductory remarks, CPSP President Professor Muhammad Shoaib Shafi commended the Fellows and their families for their accomplishments and emphasised the college’s efforts both domestically and abroad. Stressing the value of emergency medicine and guaranteeing high-quality patient care at large hospitals, he suggested to the government expanding the number of seats available for postgraduate students and sustaining the postgraduate medical education program at the district level.
The President of the CPSP granted honorary fellowships to three distinguished foreign medical professionals: Professor Andrew Elder of the United Kingdom, Professor SMM Niyas of Sri Lanka, and Professor Afzal Javed of the United Kingdom. The Professor Zafarullah Chaudhry Gold Medal in General Surgery went to Dr. Muhammad Sultan-ul-Mozzam, while the Professor Ambreen Afzal Ehsan Gold Medal in Prosthodontics went to Dr. Fatima Nawaz Khan.
In addition to expressing gratitude for the national and international services provided by CPSP, Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the lack of medical professionals in emergency care and expanding the number of seats available in these specialities. He thanked the fellows and their families, urged them to make helping sick people their life’s work, and assured CPSP of the government’s unwavering patronage and support.
In their remarks, Professors Andrew Elder and SMM Niyas praised CPSP as a superb university for medical education and emphasised the value of cooperation in providing high-quality patient care and research. They emphasised how important it is for the medical industry to have modern technology.
In addition to thanking the distinguished visitors for their participation and giving them mementos, the CPSP President gave the Fellows their degrees at the end of the convocation.
