HEC Recommends a Standard Compensation Plan for Vice Chancellors
A proposal for a uniform compensation package for vice-chancellors nationwide has been made to the federal finance ministry by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC).
The Pakistani President’s ultimate approval of the idea is still pending. The summary stated that a vice chancellor would get an annual salary of Rs1,503,152 in the final year of their term.
The suggested pay scale is as follows: the first year’s compensation is Rs1,026,675, the second year’s salary is Rs1,129,342, the third year’s salary is Rs1,242,276 and the fourth year’s salary is Rs1,366,502.
This compensation package will be applicable to all vice-chancellors, rectors, and heads selected through search committees in accordance with the law, according to a letter from HEC Executive Director Ziaul Qayyum.
The package will take effect after receiving permission from the chancellors of public sector universities and the finance division of the relevant governments.
According to the idea, utilities and house rent will only be paid if the head, rector, or vice-chancellor does not live in housing that is maintained by the institution.
No additional allowances will be given because all of the allowances are included in the wage package.
Although the HEC may occasionally update it, budgetary increases made by the federal and provincial governments at the beginning of a fiscal year will not have an impact on this wage package. During the vice chancellor’s term, no specific requests for changes to the compensation package will be entertained; instead, the package decided upon at the time of appointment will apply.
