The term of HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed is extended by PM Shehbaz Sharif
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, has been given an extra year to serve in his role by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This postponement comes after a Tuesday summary that was sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Federal Education by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
On Monday, July 29, 2024, Dr. Ahmed’s initial two-year term came to an end. He was appointed on that same date in 2022. Dr. Ahmed has made substantial contributions to the field of higher education, according to a summary that the education ministry had previously pushed that recommended the extension.
Dr. Ahmed is a well-known educationist who was the HEC Chairman from 2014 to 2018. Despite obstacles such as the contentious shortening of the HEC Chairman’s term from four to two years during the PTI government, his leadership is acknowledged with improving Pakistan’s higher education scene. The reduction was implemented by ordinance, which resulted in the early dismissal of Dr. Tariq Banuri, the then-chairman.
As a sign of their support for Dr. Ahmed’s ongoing leadership, the Ministry of Federal Education had pushed for a two-year extension. But the HEC chairman was only given a one-year extension by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The HEC also announced the nomination of Lt. Gen. (R) Moazzam Ejaz, HI (M), as the next Chairperson of the National Technology Council (NTC), in conjunction with Dr. Ahmed’s extension. Beginning on July 29, 2024, Lt. Gen. Ejaz, the Rector of the National University of Technology (NUTECH) in Islamabad, will serve as the NTC’s leader for a four-year period.
