Has HEC ceased providing funding to universities in Sindh?
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, the chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), provided a thorough explanation of the continuous funding for Sindhi universities. In response to apprehensions regarding the awards’ perpetuity, Dr. Ahmed gave stakeholders confidence that money will continue to flow to Sindh’s educational institutions after the June 1 deadline.
Dr. Ahmed clarified the background of the planned suspension of payments to provincial universities, pointing out that Waseem Ajmal, the previous federal education secretary, was responsible for the idea’s emergence. He made it clear, though, that this idea was only ever in its early stages and never went any farther.
Dr. Ahmed emphasised the importance of the regulatory framework guiding these decisions and the crucial role the Council of Common Interests plays in approving any potential suspension of funding to provincial universities. He emphasised the HEC’s unwavering opposition to the proposal, claiming that stopping funding without the necessary authorization would go against accepted practices.
While applauding the aggressive actions of the provincial government, Dr. Ahmed also noted a notable increase in the grants that Sindh’s institutions are receiving. He said that there had been reports of a significant rise from the current Rs. 26 billion to Rs. 40 billion, indicating a real commitment to supporting higher education in the area.
Regarding the expected increase in financing, Dr. Ahmed was upbeat and predicted that it will have a favourable effect on the financial stability of universities. He anticipated that the planned increase in funding will lessen the financial burden on educational establishments and improve Sindh’s academic environment as a result.
