The KP Chief Minister succeeds the Governor as Chancellor of public universities.
The administration of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has declared that the Chief Minister has been appointed Chancellor of all public universities, taking the place of the Governor.
Vice-Chancellors (VCs) in all public universities will now be appointed by the Chief Minister, per a notification from the KP Assembly Secretariat.
A bill to improve university administration has been introduced by the KP government. Following the assembly’s adoption of the law, the governor was replaced as the chancellor of all public universities by the chief minister. Additionally, the Chief Minister will designate Vice-Chancellors (VCs), giving the provincial government additional power.
The chief minister will still have the power to choose vice-chancellors, and the academic search committee will submit three choices for the position to the chief minister. The vice-chancellor’s term has been extended to four years under the measure.
The monitoring committee, which was established by the government, will review the VCs’ tenure. It will also assess the vice chancellor’s performance, and if it falls below 65 percent, the tenure may be terminated.
The amendment bill 2024 states that only women will serve as vice chancellors at women’s universities.
