The Punjab government closes all schools and colleges in four divisions because of the smog.
As part of immediate steps to mitigate the region’s extreme air pollution, the Punjab government has declared that all public and private schools and colleges, from elementary to upper secondary levels, will close.
Beginning on November 17, educational institutions in the divisions of Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan will switch to online instruction in response to dangerously high pollution levels.
The decision was made after an evaluation of the province’s air quality, which has reached dangerous levels. According to recent tests, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has above 1,000.
According to Punjab’s Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, the region’s air quality has been negatively affected by the pollution, which is mostly caused by industrial emissions and crop burning.
Aurangzeb encouraged institutions to embrace online learning in order to protect children and employees during the period of smog crisis.
Aurangzeb underlined that the temporary switch to online learning is a preventative step against the negative impacts of pollution on students and young children, and that health and safety continue to be the top concerns.
