Six people injured in an explosion at Islamia University’s Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies.

At the Islamia University Baghdad Al-Jadeed campus, an explosion at the Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies building is said to have been triggered by a gas leak on Thursday.

Six people were hurt when half of the structure collapsed as a result of the explosion. Faculty staff and research students among the injured are being taken to Bahawal Victoria Hospital to for medical attention.

Dr. Abdullah, the institute’s director, is one of the people with serious injuries. Among those injured in the explosion are two workers and two students.

Two of the injured, according to sources, had significant burns from the fire that started after the chemical explosion.

Authorities are responding to the explosion site, and the reason of the incident is being looked into.
