Sindh Declares It Will Test Students for Drugs

Beginning on May 10, the Excise & Taxation Department will take enforcement action against unregistered automobiles, according to Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon. In addition, students in educational institutions will be subject to arbitrary drug testing.

Memon underlined at a press conference the importance of drug usage as a global problem that disproportionately affects young people. He emphasised the recent order issued by President Asif Zardari to tackle the drug problem in the province.

Memon praised the work being done in the current anti-drug operations by several government agencies, especially that of Home Minister Ziaul Hassan. He told parents to be on the lookout for his plans to open new rehab facilities.
Memon highlighted recent achievements, stating that 1,550 people had been taken into custody and large amounts of drugs had been found. He emphasised the need to handle drug-positive student tests in a private manner and promised tough punishment for drug providers.

Memon announced that, with regard to car registration, unregistered cars would be impounded as of May 10. In addition to warning of penalties for late car tax payments, he recommended expeditious registration plate collecting.
Memon mentioned a pending hiring procedure because of a legal stay order in response to concerns about staff shortages in the drug control department. This is causing delays and irritation among job seekers.
