Al Wakeel/Wakil – “Allah is Sufficient for me. He is the best disposer of affairs.”

Meaning of Al-Wakeel/Wakil

According to Wikipedia Wakil means advocate, agent and a trustee in Arabic. It comes from the root w-k-l meaning:

  • Appointing or entrusting for caring or managing something
  • Guardian of one’s interests
  • To rely upon

A wakeel normally represents another person efficiently who cannot do so on his own. Al-Wakeel is One who is the ultimate Trustee. Al-Wakeel says:

But it increased them in faith, and they said, “Sufficient for us is Allah , and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs [Quran, 3:173] . . . To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs [Quran, 4:171] and The Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs [Quran, 73:]

Let’s apply this beautiful name to our daily lives:

Have Tawakkul (reliance) Try to be like a Wakeel Remember He is enough for you. Don’t worry about the future.
Do your best and leave the rest to Allah.

Be someone whom others can trust

If you face a problem/challenge, turn to Al Wakeel.

Often we are worried and anxious about the future….will I get a job after my studies? Can I get admission in my desired university? Will my daughter get married to a good man? Trust in Allah and stop worrying about the future.

Word of Advice for Students:

Hasbunaa-llaah Wa ni’mal wakeel” – A very powerful dua indeed!

Hasbunaa-llaah: from hasaba, meaning ‘sufficient for us’. When you know that Allah is sufficient for you, He is the Bestower and the Withholder, you will feel a sense of calm and contentment over His decisions.

Wa ni’mal wakeel: meaning ‘and He is the Best Disposer of affairs’. When you put your trust in Allah, you leave your matter to Him, You know He will do what is in your best interest.

Thus, remember this dhikr as a healing when you are faced with life’s challenges and problems. Man is anxious, restless and ungrateful. We often try to take control of things, be it our education, choosing a life partner, making decisions for our loved ones or simply deciding what to do today. We must make an effort but then we should remind ourselves that the final decision is Allah’s. If I am to become a doctor by Allah’s will, no one can stop it from happening. But, if I am to change my profession, Allah must have chosen something even better and He will put Barakah in it Insha Allah.

Learn to relax, stay calm, practice mindfulness and call on upon Allah with His name, Al-Wakeel. Try ]doing this for 5-10 minutes everyday to feel at peace and to accept Allah’s decree for you, gracefully!
